“Misleading or unrealistic promotions” in Google Merchant Center: what it really flags on Shopify, and the Black Friday 2026 pricing traps

Checked against Google Merchant Center Help on October 28, 2026 · By the Unflagged team · Not affiliated with Google

Short answer. “Misleading or unrealistic promotions” is an item-level disapproval: Google found product listings with claims it considers misleading or unrealistic, such as a scientifically unlikely result. Flagged products stop showing, and if most of your feed is flagged, the whole account can be disapproved. On Shopify, the usual sources are supplier-copied descriptions, claims in product titles, and images. Remove or rewrite the claims, then request review.

What Google checks

Why it happens on Shopify

No public case we documented was filed under this issue name. The closest pattern, unsupported claims (medical claims, "100% original"), appears in 3 of the 7 reinstated misrepresentation cases that stated causes. These are other merchants' reports, not our clients.

1. Supplier descriptions imported with the product

Import apps copy supplier text word for word: "relieves pain instantly", "clinically proven". Once the Google & YouTube channel syncs the product, that text is part of your listing.

2. Claims and sale text in titles

"Miracle Serum – Results in 3 Days – 70% OFF" breaks two rules. Google's title rules say "Don't include promotional text" and keep price and sale details out (Title [title] and structured title).

3. Images that make the claim for you

Before-and-after photos, "doctor recommended" stickers, "-70%" badges. Google doesn't allow product images with promotional elements or overlays; it's a separate issue, but the same clean-up (Allow Merchant Center to improve your product images).

Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2026: the pricing side

Black Friday is Friday, November 27, 2026; Cyber Monday is November 30. These habits mostly fall outside this issue name and under stricter rules: Google treats dishonest pricing as egregious, with suspension possible without warning (Misrepresentation).

Fix it step by step

  1. Get the full list: in Needs attention, filter for the issue and download the affected products (11573992).

Check: you have every item ID listed under "Misleading or unrealistic promotions".

  2. List every claim on each flagged product: title, description, images, badges.

Check: each claim you keep is backed by a document you hold, such as a test report.

  3. Fix the source in Shopify, or the next sync can bring the claim back. If a product can't be sold without the claim, remove it from the Google channel in the product's Publishing section (called “Sales channels” in older admins).

Check: the live page, its view-source and the Merchant Center product details all show the new text.

  4. Sweep the whole catalog for the same claims and overlays; Google expects unflagged violations removed too.

Check: the CSV search returns zero hits, and each first image shows only the product.

  5. Run the Black Friday pass above.

Check: each item passes its check on mobile, in a private window, with a VPN set to your selling country.

  6. Let diagnostics update; Google notes Needs attention can take time to refresh (same page as step 1).

Check: fixed items no longer show the issue before you request any review.

Before you request a review

For a product-level issue, open the product's Fix option and choose Request website check or I disagree with the issue (Request a review of your issues). Disagree only when the claim is true and you can upload documents; you get one chance.

If it grows into an account disapproval, a cooldown may begin after a second unsuccessful attempt and may lengthen after each one; Google publishes no fixed number of attempts. Remove all violating offers before any bulk appeal, because failed bulk appeals can limit future appeals (Editorial and professional requirements).

FAQ

Do I have to request a review for every product individually?

Not necessarily. Google describes fixing products one at a time from Needs attention, or in bulk by downloading the affected list, removing those items from your product data and re-uploading (11573992). With the Shopify channel, fix the products in Shopify and let them sync.

If most of my products show a crossed-out price, will Google see it as deceptive?

Google publishes no percentage. A forum reply suggested removing compare-at prices from 80% of the catalog; that number isn't Google's. Google's rules turn on whether the regular price is real: you keep submitting it, and Google validates sale prices against your site (9017019).

Could leftover code from old apps get my products flagged?

Google doesn't say scripts are flagged; what counts is what the page shows. A removed app can leave an app embed or theme code that keeps showing a badge or timer. Check App embeds, then search the product page source for the app's name.
