Price mismatch between your Shopify store and Merchant Center: VAT, Markets, variants and structured data

Checked against Google Merchant Center Help on October 28, 2026 · By the Unflagged team · Not affiliated with Google

Short answer. A price mismatch means the price Google reads on your Shopify product page differs from the price in your product data. Affected products are disapproved, and persistent mismatches can lead to an account suspension. The usual Shopify causes are taxes shown differently by country, Markets currency and rounding rules, variant links that show another variant's price, and theme and app structured data that disagree.

Google compares the price in your product data with the price on your landing page. Its help page says the two must match exactly. When they don't, products get disapproved. Google also warns that price mismatches can lead to an account suspension (Mismatched product price).

On Shopify, the usual causes are tax display, Markets currencies, variant links, sale prices and structured data. Here's how each one breaks and how to check it.

How Google checks your price

So the question isn't "what do I see?" It's "what does a crawler see on first load, for this country?"

VAT and sales tax

Google's rule depends on the target country. For the US and Canada, the price must exclude sales tax. For VAT countries, including the UK, Germany and France, it must include VAT (Price attribute).

On Shopify, two settings matter:

Read Shopify's fine print. Dynamic tax display only shows correctly on product pages and in the cart if you sell in local currencies and use Shopify Payments. Otherwise, it depends on the visitor having an eligible address, cookies enabled and a previous visit. A crawler isn't a returning customer with cookies. That last point is our inference, but it's exactly the gap between bots and shoppers that Google lists as a cause.

What to do: choose one tax display rule per target country. Make sure a first-time visitor from that country sees prices that follow it. Then compare with the price Merchant Center shows for that country.

Shopify Markets and currencies

Markets can change the price a country sees in four ways. It can convert currency at the current exchange rate, round prices, apply percentage adjustments or use fixed prices from catalogs (Shopify: Pricing in local currencies).

Each one is legitimate, and each one gives the product data and the page a chance to drift apart:

In the Google & YouTube app, you choose which countries to sync in the app's Settings, under Product sync. Those Shopify markets need to be active, with general shipping rates set up (Syncing your products).

Variants

Google treats every variant as a separate product, grouped with item_group_id. Each variant needs its own landing page URL that opens with that variant selected and shows its price (Item group ID). Google lists variant URLs that don't preselect the variant as a cause of inaccurate prices (Inaccurate price status).

Shopify themes support variant deep links with a ?variant= parameter (Shopify developer docs: Product variants). To test, copy a variant's link from Merchant Center and open it in a private window. The price on screen should be that variant's price, not the first variant's.

Structured data

Structured data must match what the shopper sees. Ideally, a page has one offer. If it shows several, such as one per variant, each needs a SKU or GTIN that matches the id or gtin in your product data (Set up structured data).

Your theme may output product markup, and so may an SEO app. If both do, check that they agree. Google recommends checking your markup in Search Console or with the Rich Results Test.

Merchant Center's automatic item updates can fix occasional price and availability differences using that markup. You'll find them under Products > Automations. Google says they don't replace keeping your product data current. It may also stop updates if there are too many mismatches.
